    According to Shirley (12/05 to Carl), Jack's parents were Sam and "Gertrude," and he had siblings Frances, Rose and Lou.  They lived in Brooklyn.  Shirley and Jack were married five years before moving to California.
    
    According to Shirley, Jack's father Sam was "a mama's boy" who left his wife Gertrude (Gussie) pregnant in London and went to find his mother.  Sam was extremely surprised when Gert and their son Louis caught up with him in NY.  (Gert couldn't get into the U.S. the first time she tried, since either she or Louis had the measles.) 
    Bert remembers that Sam's son Jack worked for the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a ship fitter after the war broke out.  Jack was an iron worker, said Shirley, and did "beautiful wrought iron."   When Jack married Shirley, Shirley's father David threw a lavish wedding; Sam asked David why he didn't give some of the money to the kids instead, to which David made it clear that he deliberately planned for the wedding to make a huge splash.  When the couple learned on their honeymoon that Sam's business partner had absconded with all the funds -- "a wonderful wedding present," said Shirley, who didn't care for her father-in-law.  Sam later got a job as the superintendent of a building, but he had a serious heart condition and his wife did "all the work."  One time Sam proposed a visit to Jack and Shirley, but Shirley told him "the next time you see me is when you can see your ass in the mirror without turning around!"  Also acc. to Shirley, Sam's children made him retire at age 75 (est. 1961); his business was "ladies' stores."
    
    Bert recalled (12/05) that when Jack's son Fred was 17, Jack marched him down to the enlistment office; Fred became a corpsman (medic).

    CMB:  Sandy, did you ever meet Fred's father Jack Katz? Do you remember anything about him?
    Sandy:  No I never met Jack. He was long gone when I came around.  Didn't know that much about him other than he used to beat Fred.  According to Fred.  But he probably deserved some of it!!!
