    According to Shirley, Sam was "a mama's boy" who left his wife Gertrude (Gussie) pregnant in London and went to find his mother.  Sam was extremely surprised when Gert caught up with him in NY.  (Gert couldn't get into the U.S. the first time she tried, since she had the measles.)  Sam was an iron worker, said Shirley, and did "beautiful wrought iron."   When Sam's son Jack married Shirley, Shirley's father David threw a lavish wedding; Sam asked David why he didn't give some of the money to the kids instead, to which David made it clear that he deliberately planned for the wedding to make a huge splash.  When the couple learned on their honeymoon that Sam's business partner had absconded with all the funds -- "a wonderful wedding present," said Shirley, who didn't care for her father-in-law.  Sam later got a job as the superintendent of a building, but he had a serious heart condition and his wife did "all the work."  One time Sam proposed a visit to Jack and Shirley, but Shirley told him "the next time you see me is when you can see your ass in the mirror without turning around!"  Also acc. to Shirley, Sam's children made him retire at age 75 (est. 1961); his business was "ladies' stores."
