    from researcher Bob CHAMPLIN:
    
    Francis Cole Champlin, son of Ebenezer Champlin and Margaret Smith, was born on February 5, 1798 at Rensselaerville (Rensselaer County) New York. He died on April 12, 1880 at Hamden, Ohio and was buried on the family farm.
    
    Francis migrated from New York and settled in Morgan County, Ohio then enlisted in the army to serve during the War of 1812 at Athens County, Ohio on November 28, 1814 as a volunteer substitute for Mr. S. Rice who had been the one drafted. He served under Captain Jordan Manning in the Ohio Militia as a Private and was discharged on April 10, 1815 at Upper Sandusky.
    
    On July 16, 1822 he was married by Reverend Wolfe, a Methodist preacher, to Rachel Gibbons in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and they settled on a farm near Hamden Junction (Scioto County) Ohio. Rachel, daughter of John Gibbons and Catherine Herbert (aka: Catherine Herbaugh), was born in Virginia on January 22, 1801 and died on July 19, 1888 in Vinton County Ohio. She was buried in the Red Brush Church Cemetery.
    
    John Gibbons/Gibbens and Catherine Herbert/Herbaugh were married in Hardy County, Virginia c1795. John was a farmer who died of yellow fever on August 18, 1871. Catherine was born in Moorefield, Hardy County on June 20, 1782 and died in Leachtown (Wood County) Virginia on April 19, 1875.
    
    Francis Cole's will:
    Francis wrote a somewhat strange Will, dated September 4, 1879 - strange in that he left almost everything to his oldest son, Jefferson.
    
    Jefferson was given the following:
    
    - all real estate (80 acres in Clinton, Ohio)
    - all personal property, including:
    - two horses
    - one wagon
    - one double shovel-plow
    - one cross cut saw
    - one shot gun
    - one bull, three cows and a two year old heifer
    - one yearling
    - all household furniture (after Rachel's death)
    
    The other surviving children (Orrison, Lorinda, Calvin, Caroline, Sophronia and Jerusha were to receive $10 each from Jefferson. No specific mention was made of the house and barn. Jefferson was required to take care of his parents until they died.  (from researcher Bob CHAMPLIN)
    
    Gibbens-Butcher Genealogy (1894):  "FRANCIS COLE CHAMPLIN was born 5 February 1798, in what Colony is not now known.  His parents came from Germany to America.  He migrated West from New York, and settled in Morgan county, Ohio, and 11 July 1822 married Rachel, daughter of John and Catherine (Herbert) Gibbens.  In early days they settled upon a farm in Scioto county, near the present Hamden Junction.  He died 12 April 1880, and was buried upon the farm in Vinton county.  She died 19 July 1888, and is interred at Red Brush Church."

    1860 US Census (Jun 22), post office Reed's Mill, residing in Clinton Twp, Vinton Cty, OH, head of h/hold Francis CHAMPLIN, farmer, 61 y.o., b. NY, value of real/pers estate 1200/290, living with Rachel CHAMPLAIN (sic), 59 y.o., b. VA, son Jefferson, 30 y.o., b. OH (cf. 1870), daughter Jerusha, 25 y.o., b. OH.
    
    1850 US Census (Aug 19), residing in Clinton Twp, Vinton Cty, OH (district 148), head of h/hold Francis CHAMPLAIN (sic), farmer, 52 y.o., b. NY, value of real estate 500, living with Rachel, 49 y.o., b. VA, and 8 (children), all b. OH:  Nancy, 26; Jefferson, 24; Corinda, 21; Britana, 18; Calvin, 16; Carolina, 12; Sophronia, 9; Jerusha, 6.
    
    (Note Vinton Cty was created partly from Jackson Cty in 1850.)
    
    Likely match:  1840 US Census, residing in Clinton Twp, Jackson Cty, OH, head of h/hold Frances C. CHAMPLIN, male 0111001, female 212101 (age 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40).; youngest two males correspond in age to Calvin and Jefferson, thus one older son b. 1820-1825; there may be one or two more daughters as well. 
    
    Most likely match:  1830 US Census, residing in Richland Twp, Jackson Cty, OH, head of h/hold Francis CHAMPLAIN (sic), 200001-21001 (male-female age 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40).
    
    There is also a Frannie CHAMPLIN in Vermilion Twp, Huron Cty, OH (northern OH), head of h/hold, male 100001, female 111101 (age 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40), son could be Jefferson, appear to be two more dtrs b. < 1830 than at home in 1850.
    
    U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900, complied by Bill Yates:  Francis CHAMPLIN, male, b. NY 1798, married Rachael (no surname given), b. VA 1800, in OH, marriage year not given in online record.

    Looking for info on Francis CHAMPLIN, born 1798 and appears in the 1850 Franklin County census. He married Rachael GIBBENS and they had a son, Calvin. Calvin married Elizabeth C. WISE in 1855. She died in 1870 and is buried at Napoleon, IN

NY, value of real est 1500, living with Dorcas (female), age 54, b. VT, and four (children):  Rhoda Ann 17 b. NY, William 16 b. NY (blacksmith), and Amanda and George, both 10 and b. "O," plus an Ireland-born male Wm. McGRAIN (boarder?).
