    Joseph Champlin, son of Joseph Champlin and Deborah Burdick, was born at Westerly, Rhode Island in the 1730's. He died shortly after October 1781 as his wife was enumerated as a widow with five children (two boys and three girls all under 15 years of age) at Newport, Rhode Island in the 1782 Census.
    
    He married twice. The name of his first wife is unknown but she was the mother of some of his children (at least his two sons and possibly the unnamed girls) all of whom were born in Newport:

    Joseph's second wife was Anna Starr Prentice. Anna, daughter of Captain Stephen Prentice (1728-1799) and Ann Starr (1731-1798) of New London, was born in 1759 and died in 1837. She was a lineal descendent of William Brewster, a passenger on the Mayflower.

    On September 12, 1776 he was paid $8.00 for piloting the Sloop Montgomery from Fairfield to New London, Connecticut.
    
    Joseph sailed aboard privateers during the Revolution. On October 7, 1781 he was made prize master and was responsible for delivering the captured British vessel "Chance" to New London, Connecticut where all of the ship's papers were turned over to the registry office there for Libel. The "Chance" had been captured by Captain Samuel Champlin and his ship "The Fair American"

    also:  Fair American, Brigantine.  Samuel Champlin, of New London, commander; commissioned July 18, 1781.  14 guns, 90 men.  Bonded for $20,000.  Bonders, Samuel Champlin, Jabez Perkins and Jos. Howland.  Owned by Jabez Perkins & Co. of Norwich.
    
    Captain Champlin was formerly 3d Lieutenant on board the Colony Ship Oliver Cromwell, under command of Capt. Colt.
    
    On the 7th of October, Capt. Champlin of this brig while cruising off Long Island, captured the sloop Chance (in Lat. 40 degrees, Long. 74 degrees), commanded by Edward Donaghue, from Ireland.  The prize master was Joseph Champlin, who brought her into New London Oct. 11th, and delivered all her papers to the Registrar's office for libel.  Capt. Samuel Champlin's commission is endorsed, describing him as 44 years old, 5 feet 8 1/2 inches tall, light, and pitted with smallpox.  Zebediah Smith, his Lieutenant, 40 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall, light complexion, and pitted from smallpox.
    
    On Nov. 27, 1781, the command of the Fair American appears to have been transferred to Capt. Peleg Eldred of Norwich...
