It is very odd but there is a gravestone in Camus Old graveyard, which was erected by a Charles Brewster of Philadelphia and it gives entirely different details from those supplied by Kay Franklin. This is what it says:
"In memory of Robert Bruster late of Camus, who died on 27th May 1818, aged 37 years. His son Charles of Philadelphia erected this stone. James Brewster Ballytaggart died 1897 aged 89, his wife Rachel 1884 aged 74. James Brewster Drumart Ballymoney Died 1923 aged 74."
I have emailed Kay with these details but she has not yet offered an explanation. Are there really TWO Charleses who went to Philly?!!
BG: It seems there are indeed two Charleses from Philly because the one who erected the stone in Camus had a father called Robert while Anne Brewster gave her father as John Brewster when she married Hugh Creelman.
BB has now sent me an immigration records for a Charles. He arrived in Philly, aged 13, in 1826. This fits the DoB given by Kay Franklin. He was along with a John, aged 70! This does not fit as the father of this Charles. May be a grandfather (BB now says Kay Franklin confirms he was a grandfather).
BB has also sent me the 1860 census for Iowa, which shows a Charles Brewster, born Ireland, merchant aged 44. This gives a DoB of 1816. He is living with his siblings, Eliza Jane, Mary and James. (BG: We now think Eliza Jane is his wife)
BB says (030707), "BOTH William Creelman AND Hugh Creelman are living in the same area in Philly as Charles Gray. AND Hugh Creelman has living with him a Mary Brewster- age 30. This is the 1850 Census now - I went back to it. So Mary must be Ann's sister and she is living with them but later moves in with Charles Brewster, her
brother, in Iowa....at some point."
BB says (030707), "Hugh Creelman's wife, Ann Brewster, apparently did die in 1854 as Kay says. He then moved from Philadelphia to Lee, Madison, Iowa with 2 daughters and Mary Brewster, his sister in law. He marries a widow, Jane Mitchell who apparently had a son John. Mary Brewster moves in with brother Charles Brewster."

BB has now sent me a death notice drom a newspaper dated 13th November 1893, which states: "Charles Brewster, a resident of Fort Madison, Iowa, since 1844 is dead. He was a banker and 82 years old." This would give a DoB of 1811.

BB: Using the Philadelphia City Directories as a guideline (and they start back in 1791) the ONLY Brewster/Bruster who is even likely to be the uncle of Charles of Iowa is Charles Brewster who appears in 1820 PCD. Before that there are NO Brewsters except for 3 who are shipmasters (James, Henry and Samuel), various widows, and in 1816/1817 a J. E. Brewster, merchant for only 2 years. A Jonathan Brewster appears in 1817 -1819 and then there is Charles who is there for a very long time from 1820-1850.
So, I would say that this Charles Brewster is the uncle of young Charles and the son of John Brewster who escorted young Charles to America. He probably came shortly before 1820. The fact that they are all recorded in some way or another at the 1st Reformed Presbyterian Church indicates they all came from that Macosquin area of Seceders.
We just need to hope the Iowa newspaper story is correct about Charles coming with his grandfather to live with an uncle. I see no reason why it wouldn't be especially since there is actually a Charles B living in Philadelphia when young Charles arrives.
The only way I can see that Charles Brewster of the gravestone is the same as the Iowa Charles is if 3 of those siblings(Anne, James and Jane) are not in fact his siblings living in Iowa but his cousins. The ages are quite a bit later that Charles and the names are more likely to be first children names than later children names. However, Jane, Charles and Anne named first or second daughters Martha!! That should indicate their mother was a Martha.
BB: William Brewster, the son of Charles Brewster of Iowa applied for membership in The Sons of the American Revolution in 1897 claiming descent from Abraham Deforest. I have attached the application. The main thing here is that he gives his middle name as John!!! I have been wondering why Charles did not name a son after his father....he may have had an earlier son named John who died but, at any rate, William does have the middle name of John which is more evidence of this man's father being a John.
