Information compiled in this data set was originally edited by P. William Filby and published as a book volume called Philadelphia Naturalization Records. It includes information on more than 113,000 immigrants to America from nearly 100 countries who applied for citizenship through the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania courts system from 1789 to 1880. Most of the records list an individual's name, any alternate spellings or interpretations of that name, that individual's country of former allegiance, as well as the date and location the individual filed a declaration of intention and/or oath of allegiance.
William's father was
Samuel Alexander Wray and his mother was
Rebecca Steen. His paternal grandparents were
Samuel Wray and
Elizabeth Dun; his maternal grandparents were
Joseph Steen and
Janey Campbell. He had a brother and two sisters, named
Samuel,
Margaret and
Catherine. He was the second youngest of the four children. He died due to heart disease, Chronic myocarditis, at the age of 92 on April 4th, 1939 in
Philadelphia. The funeral took place on April 6th, 1939. He was buried in
Whitemarsh.

Wrote a letter to his brother Samuel dated 15th april 1873 inviting Samuel and his family out to Philadelphia to start a new life. He didn't go but came to Scotland (Port Glasgow)
