Janet's father was Thomas Walker and her mother was Janet Broun.  Her paternal grandparents were William Walker and Elizabeth Barron; her maternal grandparents were Broun and <Unknown>. She had a brother and six sisters, named James, Mary, Elisabeth, Marion, Isobel, Margaret and Jean.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
