James' father was Thomas Walker and his mother was Janet Broun.  His paternal grandparents were William Walker and Elizabeth Barron; his maternal grandparents were Broun and <Unknown>. He had seven sisters named Mary, Janet, Elisabeth, Marion, Isobel, Margaret and Jean.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
