Alexander's father was Alexander Walker and his mother was Helen Laurence.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Walker and Isobel Lorn; his maternal grandparents were John Laurance and <Unknown>. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Jean, Isabel and Janet.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died before 1851.²
