John's father was Thomas Peacock Towers and his mother was Maggie Galbraith. His paternal grandparents were William Towers and Agnes Peacock. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Thomas, Joseph and Agnes. He was the third oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 57 in 1959 in Banff.
