Philip was born on December 15th, 1835 in Manchester and his baptism took place there on January 10th, 1836.¹

Philip's father was Philip Thomson and his mother was Jessie Geddes.  His paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Jean Duncan. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Jessie, Jane and Dora.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died before 1868.²
