John was born in 1833 in Manchester.1   John's father was Philip Thomson and his mother was Jessie Geddes.  His paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Jean Duncan. He had a brother and three sisters, named Philip, Jessie, Jane and Dora.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 35 in July 1868 in Cheshire.2
