Hugh's father was Peter Savage and his mother was Agnes Mackie. His paternal grandparents were David Savage and Elizabeth Smith. He had two brothers and three sisters, named David, Willie, Nellie, Lizzie and Martha. He was the second youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 65 in 1961 in Glasgow.
