Thomas' father was Thomas George Wilson Salton and his mother was Catherine (Kate) Euphemia Rennie. His maternal grandparents were James Rennie and Catherine (Kate) Stobo. He had three sisters named Catherine, Isabella and Mabel. He was the youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 79 in 1979 in Edinburgh.
