Samuel's father was John Rennie and his mother was Elizabeth Hay Hannay Young. His paternal grandparents were James Rennie and Catherine (Kate) Stobo. He had a brother and a sister, named James and Martha. He was the second oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 85 in 1971 in Largs.
