John's father was James Rennie and his mother was Catherine (Kate) Stobo.  His paternal grandparents were John Rennie and Euphemia McKichan. He had three sisters named Eliza, Kate and Jennie.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 66 in 1923 in Eastwood.
