Robert's father was George Paterson and his mother was Christian Philp.  His maternal grandparents were George Philp and Margaret Finlayson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named George, John, James, David, Robert, Margaret and Christian.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died before 1803.
