William's father was Robert Mitchell and his mother was Agnes Miller McPherson. His maternal grandparents were John McPherson and Margaret Rennie. He had four brothers and a sister, named Robert, John, James, John and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 80 in 1987 in Greenock.
