William's father was Robert McMillan and his mother was Isabella Robertson. His maternal grandparents were John Robertson and Agnes Gourlay. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Robert, John, McMillan and Agnes. He was the second oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 2 in 1878 in New Cumnock.
