Alexander's father was Thomas McLuckie and his mother was Janet Hunter Brown. His paternal grandparents were John McLuckie and Margaret Elizabeth Henderson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, Thomas, Robert, Hugh, Jane and Margaret. He was the second youngest of the eight children.
