Malcolm's father was Thomas Marshall and his mother was Alison Robertson Kegan. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Keggans and Agnes Robertson. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Ellen and Agnes. He was the second oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 71 in 1969 in Kilmarnock.
