James Marshall

James was born on October 23rd, 1799 in Shotts and his baptism took place there in October 1799 conducted by Reverend Andrew Duncans.¹

James' father was James Marshall and his mother was Elizabeth Hamilton. His paternal grandparents were James Marshall and Margaret Mitchell; his maternal grandparents were John Hamilton and Elizabeth Fleming. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Richard, Elizabeth, Margaret and Agness. He died at the age of 81 on January 5th, 1881 in Shotts. He was buried in Shotts.²

    - inherited half of uncle John Marshall's fortune, apart from cash payments to others. Also,his lands at Sandyford and Ferrybank Mill, though only after the death of John's brother Thomas.
      His sons also were entitled to a sum of £100 "should any of the sons of James, John or Richard appear to have abilities and inclination to follow out any of the learned professions"
