Isobel was born on December 2nd, 1836 in Mauchline and her baptism took place there on December 20th, 1836.1 2  Isobel's father was Robert Mann and her mother was Agnes Campbell Fraser.  Her maternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson. She had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Alexander, Robert, Janet, Elizabeth and Agnes.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
