Robert's father was John Lees and his mother was Margaret Flinn. His maternal grandparents were William Flinn and Mary Carson. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Robert, Thomas, Mary and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 3 in 1860 in Monkton.
