James' father was Robert Ketchin and his mother was Anne Loudon.  His maternal grandparents were William Louden and Julian Johnston. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, John, John, Robert and Elisabeth.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 45 in 1907 in Liberton.  He was buried in Ratho.
