Christen was born in 1809.  Christen's father was Peder Christensen Høstgaard and his mother was Gertrud Pedersdatter.  His paternal grandparents were Christen Andersen Høstgaard and Karen Andersdatter; his maternal grandparents were Peder Jensen Sinding and Maren Michelsdatter. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Peder, Holger, Anders, Karen, Maren, Anne Kirstine, Mariane and Nicoline.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  He died due to a medical problem at the age of 25 on May 9th, 1834.
