William's father was James Henry and his mother was Nancy Hill. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, Hugh, James, Sarah and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 72 in June 1946 in Port Glasgow.  He was buried on July 1st, 1946 in Port Glasgow.^3 3
