John's father was William Hargen and his mother was Margaret Bone.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Bone and Janet Mcgrigor. He had two brothers and a sister, named Daniel, William and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died due to heart disease, cardio-vascular degeneration, 3 years, at the age of 79 on March 23rd, 1948 in Gorbals.³
