William's father was Alexander Hamilton and his mother was Elizabeth Isabella Holland. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Frazer Hamilton and Agnes Hutchison Wilson. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Hugh, Alexander, Thomas, Richard, John, Elizabeth, Agnes, Mary, Mary and Sarah. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 58 in 1936 in Kilmarnock.
