Hall's father was Hugh Hamilton and his mother was Jane (Jeanie) Lauchlan. His paternal grandparents were Hall Hamilton and Janet McKellar. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Hugh, James, John, Mary, Jessie, Jeanie and Maggie. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 78 in 1946 in Paisley.
