Jessie's father was David Grant and her mother was Magdalene Brash.  Her maternal grandparents were David Brash and Agnes Henderson. She had two brothers and a sister, named John, David and Madeline.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had two half-sisters named Christina and Rachel.  She died at the age of 2 in 1870 in Dundee.
