Margaret's father was John Hasken Erskine and her mother was Betty Ogstone.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Erskine and Barbara Potter; her maternal grandparents were John Ogston and Margaret Brown. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Boyd, John, Robert, Robert, Isabella, Betty, Christian and Christian.  Robert and Margaret were twins.
