John's father was John Hasken Erskine and his mother was Betty Ogstone.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Erskine and Barbara Potter; his maternal grandparents were John Ogston and Margaret Brown. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Boyd, Robert, Robert, Isabella, Betty, Christian, Margaret and Christian.
