Hugh's father was James Drummond and his mother was Jane (Jeanie) McPhail. His paternal grandparents were William Drummond and Christian Campbell. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, James, George, William, Michael, Jessie, Jane and Christina. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 2 in 1872 in Glasgow.
