William's father was Archibald Douglas and his mother was Margaret Jane Wray. His maternal grandparents were Samuel Alexander Wray and Rebecca Steen. He had a half-brother named Henry. He died due to a medical problem, Prostetic enlargement, suprapubic cystostomy, uraemia, at the age of 79 on April 15th, 1950 in Bellshill.³
