Elisabeth's father was Archibald Carmichael and her mother was Ann McQueen.  Her maternal grandparents were John McQueen and Ann McConnell. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Donald, John, Archibald, James, Sarah and Anne.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
