Frederick's father was Rev Robert Dick Brownlee and his mother was Jane Speirs Brash Dick. His maternal grandparents were William Dick and Jean Spiers Brash. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George, William, Robert, Jane and Margaret. He was the youngest of the six children.
