William's father was David Bone and his mother was Susan Hammond.  His paternal grandparents were David Bone and Margaret Smith. He had five brothers and six sisters, named David, John, William, James, Thomas, Agness, Margaret, Elisabeth, Elisabeth, Elspie and Susannah.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.
