Gavin's father was William Bone and his mother was Margaret Scott. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Bone and Janet Mcgrigor. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Daniel, Gregor, David, Mary and Margaret. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 77 in 1955 in Glasgow.
