John was born in 1647 in Yorksham, Devonshire, England.  John's father was Robert Zane Sr and his mother was Wilmot.  His paternal grandparents were Simon Zane and Marye Hunt. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Ellis, Mary and Hezicaias.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
