William was born about 1746 in Somerset Co., New Jersey.  William's father was Abraham Workman and his mother was Annetje Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Derkson Derikson Woertman and Anna Maria   Andries\Andriessen Andrews; his maternal grandparents are Able Smith and Tryntje Wybrantz. He had eight brothers named Benjamin, Samuel, Joseph, Stephen, Jacob, Andrew, Abraham and George.  He is the youngest of the nine children.
