John was born in 1726 in Ireland.  John's father was James Vance and his mother was Mary Hogue Hoge.  His paternal grandparents were John Vance and Mary Williamson-Williams; his maternal grandparents were William Hoge and <Unknown>. He had a brother and two sisters, named Samuel VANCE"S FORT, Esther and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 97 in 1823 in Wolf Hill, Abingdon, Washington Co., Virginia.
