Moses was born in 1768 in Edgefield County, North Carolina.  Moses' father was Van Swearingen and his mother was Rachel??? or 2nd wife.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Van Swearingen and Lydia Permenter. He had six half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Van, William, Elihah, Ansel  Ancel, Joel, John, Milley, Margaret Ann Peggy, Hannah and Zilpha.
