John was born about 1632 in Jamestown Colony, Virginia.  John's father was Capt Francis Poythress and his mother was Mary Frances Sloman Soloman.  His paternal grandparents are Joshua Poythress and Peachy; his maternal grandparents are John Sloman Soloman and Katherine Eppes. He had two brothers and a sister, named Francis, Thomas and Jane or Mary.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, Joshua and Mary.  He died in May 1724.
