John Newton was born on February 16th, 1837.  John Newton's father is Archibald McConnel and his mother is Elizabeth Marshall Houston.  His maternal grandparents are James Houston and Patience Bills. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Willis Harvey, James Carroll, Alfred Marion, Samuel Patton, Joseph Marshall, Archibald Simeon, William Jasper and Cynthia Artimissa.  He is the sixth oldest of the nine children.
