Thomas was born in August 1850 in Stockton, Durham, England.  Thomas' father was William Marshall and his mother was Dorothy Littlefair.  His paternal grandparents were Francis Marshall and Hannah Robinson. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Hannah, Elizabeth, Frances and Mary.  He was the oldest of the six children.
