Riley grew up Greenbriar Co VA was born on September 15th, 1797 in Orange County, Virginia. Riley grew up Greenbriar Co VA's father was Thomas Marshall and his mother was Nancy (Ann) Oliver. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Marshall III and Margaret Wells; his maternal grandparents were William Oliver and Martha. He had three brothers and six sisters, named William, Alexander, Samuel Martin, Sarah, Nancy, Polly, Eleanor Elender, Wilmoth and Elizabeth Ann (Betsy). He was the nineth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 66 on March 2nd, 1864 in Marion, Grant County, Indiana. He was buried in Marshall Mausoleum, Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
