Mary Susan's father was George Greenville Marshall and her mother was Frances Jane Marr. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Marshall and Eleanor Wood; her maternal grandparents were James Marr and Elizabeth Rucker. She had two brothers and a sister, named Benjamin Porter, Thomas Henry Benton and Mary Susan. She was the second oldest of the four children.
