John was born in 1811.  John's father was James* founded Marshalltown Iowa Marshall and his mother was Jane McNary.  His paternal grandparents were William Marshall and Mary Speer; his maternal grandparents were John McNary and <Unknown>. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, George, Esther, Jane, Lucinda, Agnes, Mary and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
