John was born about 1712.  John's father was Capt William Marshall and his mother was Elizabeth.  His paternal grandparents were John Marshall and Anabella Scarborough-Toft Jenifer. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Daniel, William, Charles, Solomon, George, Levin, Mary, Elizabeth and Leah.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
